Fintech
U.S. Crypto Task Force to Establish Bitcoin Reserve: The newly formed U.S. crypto task force plans to establish a national Bitcoin reserve, aiming to position the country as a global leader in the cryptocurrency sector. This initiative is part of a broader strategy under President Donald Trump’s administration to create a clear regulatory framework and promote mainstream acceptance of digital assets. The task force, led by SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, will collaborate with Congress and other agencies to develop comprehensive guidelines for the crypto industry.
Klarna to introduce Cryptocurrency Services ahead of 2025 U.S. IPO: Swedish fintech company Klarna plans to integrate cryptocurrency services into its platform before its anticipated U.S. IPO in April 2025. This strategic move aims to diversify Klarna’s offerings beyond its core buy-now-pay-later services, positioning the company to capitalize on the growing digital asset market. The decision aligns with Klarna’s broader efforts to expand its financial services and enhance its appeal to a wider customer base.
EU Payment and E-Money Licenses: 2024 Figures and Three-Year Trends: In 2024, the European Union issued 90 payment and e-money institution licenses, reflecting a stable trend compared to 80 in 2022 and 92 in 2023. Germany and Malta led with 12 licenses each, while Spain and France each issued 8. This consistency indicates a stabilized market following a 34% decline in 2022, with minimal impact from license withdrawals on the number of active companies.
GDPR
Gambling Firms Secretly Shared Users’ Data with Facebook Without Permission: An investigation has revealed that several gambling companies, including Hollywoodbets, Sporting Index, Bwin, Lottoland, and 10Bet, have been covertly transmitting user data to Facebook without obtaining proper consent. This data sharing occurred even when users did not place bets or agree to data sharing policies, leading to targeted betting advertisements on their Facebook feeds. This practice raises significant concerns about user privacy and the ethical implications of data sharing without explicit user permission.
Decision on Next EU Privacy Chief Postponed to March: The European Parliament has postponed its decision on the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) until March 2025. Lawmakers need to resolve how to start negotiations with EU member states to agree on the choice of the next EDPS. The EDPS plays a crucial role in ensuring that EU institutions and bodies comply with data protection laws.
CJEU Ruling on EDPS v SRB: Implications for Data Sharing and Privacy: In the case C-413/23, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) addressed the European Data Protection Supervisor’s (EDPS) decision against the Single Resolution Board (SRB) regarding data sharing practices. The EDPS had determined that the SRB’s transfer of pseudonymized data to a processor violated data protection regulations, as the processor was considered a recipient of personal data without proper disclosure in the privacy statement. The Advocate General opined that pseudonymized data can be considered personal data for the recipient if it is virtually impossible for them to identify data subjects, even if re-identification is possible for the data sender.

AccelerComm Unveils 6Gbps 5G Modem for Satellite Communications: AccelerComm has introduced a 6Gbps 5G physical layer IP modem designed specifically for satellite applications. This modem aims to enhance satellite communications by providing high-speed, reliable 5G connectivity, addressing challenges such as latency and Doppler effects inherent in satellite networks. The solution is expected to facilitate seamless integration of satellite and terrestrial networks, expanding the reach of 5G services globally.
Government Assigns PTS to Investigate State Support for Improved Mobile Infrastructure Nationwide: The Swedish government has tasked the Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) with investigating the feasibility of introducing state support for the expansion, management, and operation of mobile infrastructure in areas with insufficient coverage and no commercial viability. The assignment includes proposing principles for wholesale access, ensuring that operators building the infrastructure allow others to rent access, as well as analyzing similar support models in other countries. PTS must present its findings by January 30, 2026.
Ericsson Embraces Entrepreneurial Strategy Amid Mobile Industry Uncertainties: At its pre-Mobile World Congress media and analyst event, Ericsson emphasized its commitment to an entrepreneurial approach in navigating the evolving mobile industry landscape. Despite market uncertainties, the company maintains a calm and strategic stance, focusing on innovation and adaptability to address future challenges. This approach reflects Ericsson’s dedication to leading the mobile sector through proactive risk management and forward-thinking strategies.
AI
Nordic EU launches InvestAI initiative to mobilise €200 billion of investment in artificial intelligence: At the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has launched InvestAI, an initiative to mobilise €200 billion for investment in AI, including a new European fund of €20 billion for AI gigafactories.
First rules of the Artificial Intelligence Act are now applicable: As of 2 February, the first rules under the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) took effect, covering AI system definitions, AI literacy, and a limited set of prohibited practices posing unacceptable risks. The Commission will publish guidelines to clarify these rules, promote innovation through initiatives like AI Factories, and create a repository of AI literacy practices to support compliance and skill development.
Commission survey shows that most Europeans support use of artificial intelligence in the workplace: A recent Eurobarometer survey published on 13 February 2025 reveals that most Europeans support the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, with over 60% viewing robots and AI positively and more than 70% believing they boost productivity. However, 84% of respondents emphasize the need for careful management of AI to ensure transparency and protect privacy in work environments.

EBA Aligns ICT Risk Management Guidelines with DORA: The EBA has narrowed its ICT and security risk management Guidelines due to the upcoming application of DORA from 17 January 2025, ensuring a harmonized and simplified regulatory framework for financial entities. The revised Guidelines now apply only to entities covered by DORA—such as credit institutions, payment institutions, and e-money institutions—and focus specifically on relationship management requirements for payment service users. However, PSPs not covered by DORA, like credit unions and post-office giro institutions, must still comply with PSD2 security and operational risk requirements and may also be subject to additional national regulations.
Beware of Fraudsters Posing as the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority: Scammers are impersonating the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FI), contacting consumers via phone or email, and falsely offering assistance in recovering lost investments. They use FI’s logo, employee names, and misleading email addresses to appear legitimate, but FI never provides such services. Consumers should remain vigilant, avoid sharing sensitive information, and report any suspected fraud to the police.
Federal Trade Commission – How to Recognize and Avoid Online Romance Scams: Before engaging in online dating or social media connections, it is essential to recognize the warning signs of romance scams. Scammers often build trust quickly, avoid in-person meetings by claiming to be overseas, and eventually request money for emergencies or fraudulent investments. To protect yourself, never send money or gifts to someone you haven’t met, verify their identity through online searches, and report suspected scams.
