Fintech

The company supports proportionate regulation of the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) sector to ensure appropriate safeguards without hindering innovation. Klarna has actively advocated for BNPL regulation and the establishment of a national debt register in Sweden. The company welcomes proposed legislation that includes measures such as lowered interest caps, caps on arrangement fees, and enhanced requirements for credit assessments.
Alkami Acquires Fintech Firm Mantl for $400 Million: Digital banking services provider Alkami Technology is acquiring Mantl, a fintech company known as ”the Shopify of account opening,” for $400 million. This strategic acquisition aims to enhance Alkami’s digital account opening capabilities and expand its offerings to financial institutions. The integration of Mantl’s technology is expected to streamline customer onboarding processes and improve user experience. This move underscores the growing importance of seamless digital solutions in the banking industry.
Stripe’s 2024 Annual Letter Highlights Record Growth and AI Integration: In 2024, businesses using Stripe processed $1.4 trillion in total payment volume, marking a 38% increase from the previous year and representing approximately 1.3% of global GDP. This growth is attributed to Stripe’s investments in machine learning and artificial intelligence, enhancing revenue for existing customers and attracting new businesses. Stripe achieved profitability in 2024 and plans to continue reinvesting earnings into research and development, particularly in areas like stablecoins and AI. Notably, Stripe Billing emerged as a market leader, now serving over 300,000 companies and managing nearly 200 million active subscriptions.
GDPR
Balancing Public Access and Data Protection in Legal Databases in Sweden: Trobar AB, a legal database provider, requested court documents from Umeå District Court but was denied access due to potential GDPR violations. The company argued that their right to access public records should prevail. The Supreme Court ruled that the documents could be released but with strict conditions to protect personal data, prohibiting public searchability of names, personal numbers, and addresses. The case highlights the tension between Sweden’s transparency laws and GDPR’s data protection requirements. This case underscores the importance of balancing the right to public information with the protection of sensitive personal data, ensuring compliance with Article 5 GDPR (data minimization and purpose limitation) and Article 10 GDPR (processing of criminal data).
Media Freedom vs. Personal Data Protection in Sweden: Panoptes Sweden AB, operating Nyhetsbyrån Siren, requested large volumes of court documents to provide journalistic content. The Court of Appeal imposed restrictions, ruling that the company could receive the documents but could not make personal data publicly searchable. The Supreme Court upheld the decision, affirming that media organizations must comply with GDPR when processing personal data from public records. This case highlights the complexity of GDPR’s intersection with journalistic freedom. While Article 85 GDPR allows for media exemptions, authorities can still restrict the use of personal data if deemed excessive or in conflict with privacy rights (Article 8 of the EU Charter). It reinforces that even media organizations must respect GDPR principles when processing personal data from public sources.
Spanish DPA Fines Bank for Unlawful Data Processing: The Spanish Data Protection Authority (AEPD) fined a bank 70,000 EUR for violating GDPR by unlawfully processing a customer’s personal data. The bank had reported the customer to a credit bureau without proper legal basis, as there was no prior notification or opportunity to dispute the debt. The AEPD ruled that this violated Article 6 GDPR (lawfulness of processing) and Article 14 GDPR (right to information). This case reinforces the importance of transparency and due process before reporting individuals to credit agencies.
Telecom
KDDI and Space Data Collaborate on Virtual ISS Robotic Operations Demonstration: KDDI, a Tokyo-based telecommunications company, is partnering with Space Data to conduct a robotic operations demonstration within a virtual International Space Station (ISS) environment. Scheduled from April to October 2025, the project aims to replicate the movements of JAXA’s Int-Ball2 robot, currently operating on the real ISS, by using identical operational commands in the virtual setting. This initiative seeks to enhance the accuracy and reliability of virtual ISS simulations by integrating environmental data, such as imagery and gravitational conditions, from the physical ISS. Space Data, also based in Tokyo, specializes in merging space technologies with digital innovations like AI and digital twins.
Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile Form European Satellite Venture: Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile have agreed to establish a joint venture aimed at providing direct-to-device satellite mobile services to European mobile network operators. This collaboration intends to simplify the adoption of satellite connectivity by offering a comprehensive, turnkey solution to mobile network operators across Europe. The initiative reflects a strategic move to enhance mobile coverage, particularly in remote and underserved regions, by integrating satellite technology with existing terrestrial networks. This venture builds upon previous collaborations between the two companies, including successful satellite-to-smartphone communication tests.
Nokia Enhances Boost Mobile’s 5G Capabilities with Cloud-Native Voice Core: Nokia has implemented its cloud-native 5G Voice Core solution for Boost Mobile, consolidating multiple IMS voice functionalities into a single cloud-native network function (CNF). This deployment utilizes Nokia’s Cloud Native Communication Suite (CNCS), enabling Boost Mobile to offer Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over 5G (Vo5G) services. The integration is expected to reduce Boost Mobile’s network infrastructure costs by approximately 70%, accelerate the delivery of new 5G services, and streamline network operations. Additionally, Nokia’s CNCS has demonstrated a 10-20% improvement in energy efficiency compared to standard IMS voice cores.

Google Introduces Quantum-Safe Digital Signatures: Google Cloud has introduced quantum-safe digital signatures in its Key Management Service (KMS), enhancing security against future quantum threats. These signatures use NIST-standardized quantum-safe cryptography, specifically ML-DSA-65 and SLH-DSA-SHA2-128S algorithms, to ensure data integrity and authenticity. This advancement allows customers to sign and validate data securely, protecting against potential quantum computer attacks.
Quantum Technologies: A Game Changer for ICT Leaders: The latest report, ”Quantum Technologies: Key Strategies and Opportunities for ICT Leaders,” highlights the transformative potential of quantum computing and sensing in the ICT sector. It emphasizes the importance of adopting a hybrid security approach combining post-quantum cryptography with quantum key distribution to safeguard data against future quantum threats. ICT leaders are encouraged to assess their quantum readiness, invest in quantum-safe cryptography, and collaborate with industry partners to stay ahead in the quantum economy.
Intellectual Property
AI-Driven Innovation and Intellectual Property Ownership: The rise of AI in generating inventions and creative works is reshaping intellectual property (IP) ownership, prompting countries like New Zealand and Thailand to adapt legal frameworks. Businesses must develop clear policies for managing AI-generated content and stay updated on evolving regulations to maintain a competitive edge.
Cross-Border IP Enforcement and Global Collaboration: Global trade and digital platforms are making cross-border IP enforcement more complex, with frameworks like the EU’s Unified Patent Court streamlining patent protection across regions. Companies need international IP strategies and partnerships to navigate diverse legal systems and combat infringement.
Green Technologies and Sustainability Patents: With sustainability becoming a key innovation driver, the demand for green technology patents is surging, especially in renewable energy and eco-friendly solutions. Organizations should file early patents, explore collaborative licensing models, and leverage patent pools to accelerate global adoption of green technologies.
